Working with Layers
Understand how to stack, add, and manage different tracks.
What are Layers?
Think of layers (or "tracks") like transparent sheets stacked on top of each other. In the timeline, the topmost track is visually on top in the video canvas. You can place videos, images, and text on different layers to create complex compositions.
Adding & Deleting Tracks
Click the "+" button with a video or audio icon in the timeline toolbar to add a new video or audio track, respectively. To delete a user-added track, click the trash can icon on the track header to the left. Note that default tracks cannot be removed.
Moving Clips Between Layers
Currently, dragging and dropping tracks to reorder their stacking is not supported. To change the visual stacking order of clips, you must use the Layer Manager.
Using the Layer Manager
For a precise view of all active clips at the current playhead time, open the Layer Manager panel (the stacked layers icon) from the left-hand navigation bar. It shows the stacking order of all visible clips.
- Move Up/Down: Use the up and down arrow buttons next to a clip to move it one layer up or down. This is the primary way to control which elements appear in front of others.
- Touchpad for Mobile: On mobile devices, a touchpad icon will appear next to a selected clip in the Layer Manager. Activating it enables a virtual touchpad, making it much easier to precisely move clips on the timeline, especially when multiple clips are close together.
