Separating Audio from Video

Learn how to detach audio from a video clip for independent editing.

Why Separate Audio?

Sometimes you want to edit the audio and video of a clip independently. For example, you might want the audio from one clip to continue playing over a different video clip (a J-cut or L-cut).

How to Separate

Select a video clip on the timeline. In the Effects Panel, go to the "Audio" tab and click the "Separate Audio" button. This will create a new, independent audio clip on an audio track directly below the video clip.

Independent Editing

Once separated, you can move, trim, or delete the audio clip and the video clip separately. They are no longer linked. You can now apply different effects or adjust the volume of the audio without affecting the video.
