Adjusting Volume

Select an audio clip or a video clip with audio on the timeline. In the Effects Panel, go to the "Audio" tab and use the Volume slider to increase or decrease its loudness.

Adding Fade In/Out

In the same panel, you can set a "Fade In" and "Fade Out" duration (in seconds). This creates a smooth transition from silence at the beginning of the clip and to silence at the end.

Muting a Clip

The quickest way to mute a clip is to drag its volume slider all the way to 0. You can also use the mute toggle on the track header to mute the entire track.
